Here's to a lifetime of healthy and active living!

2016-2017 Wrap Up

Each year in September, AW Becker lines up on the front lawn for the Natalie Krause Apple Run.  We celebrate our healthy bodies, the New York autumn weather (with a crisp apple donated by the AWB PTA), and our beloved teaching assistant Natalie Krause.

This year AW Becker raised nearly $2,000 while participating in Jump Rope for Heart.  .  We celebrated the money we raised with our Jump Rope for Heart event in school on December 5th, 2017.  Each student in grades 2-5 came to the gym to jump rope together.  Since 2011 AW Becker has raised over $15,000 for the American Heart Association

In December we change the gym into a Winter Wonderland.  Students travel through the snowman slalom, over the Ice Mountain, through the bear cave, then they skate into the Evergreen Forest, they put on their non-stick suits to jump through the Lollipop Forest, and finally jump down the chimney to Selkirk, NY.

February we fight cabin fever with dance. This year PE teamed up with Library in a Google Classroom for a service learning project.  The 5th graders researched dance, imagination/creativity, and children’s dance videos in library.  Then they applied what they learned to create a dance video in PE.  Take a look at them here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL61wTZg6MA9_9RlzZgL-V0M7_msL6l1-u

March the 4th and 5th graders were able to get out on the snow with some snowshoes.  Students experienced another way we can get out and play even in the colder weather.

April brought us our gymnastics unit.  Students practiced climbing, hanging, flipping, and vaulting throughout the month.  In the end we turned the gym into our Super Hero Obstacle Course.

In May we recognized the leaders in our 5th grade at the Sandra G. Morely Leadership Awards. This award is given for outstanding leadership and excellence in Physical Education.  The Physical Education staff felt that Tyler Carrk, Alivia Ortiz, Kylee Fennell, Sienna Rinella, Madison Wiley, Jack McFerran, Jack Reif, Jillian Hallisey, Jacob Alaimo, Jason Stevens Jr., Nashea Haynie, Nina Kozlowski, Edward Reville, Emerson Knapp IV, and Sydney Campbell have performed well in the areas of fitness, citizenship, and leadership.  All of these students were invited to an award ceremony at Hudson Valley Community College.  You can check out a video summary of the event here.

Jump Rope for Heart Update and more!

Jump Rope for Heart

AWB has currently raised $1,010 for the American Heart Association!  So far we have 52 students participating in grades 2-5 to raise money.  We need just 8 more to reach our goal of 60 students.  17 of those students have raised money on-line which is the easiest way to become a heart hero.  Haven’t signed up yet?  Click here to go to our school’s website and sign up!

Jump Rope for Heart Participation Rewards

The PE department has puppies to hand out for any student that raises $5 for Jump Rope for Heart.  But any student that donates any amount of money will be invited to come to the gym and Duct Tape Mr. Herwick and Ms. Loughlin to the wall of the gymnasium on Monday December 21st.  All other rewards will come after the Holiday Recess.

Becoming a Heart Hero

Your student is becoming a Heart Hero by taking care of their own heart and spreading the message of the American Heart Association.  We would like to encourage all students to complete a Heart to hang in the windows of the gym. There are 3 templates:

All hearts should be turned in to Ms. Loughlin by December 8th so they can be put up in time for our celebration on December 11th.

Intramurals

A copy of the calendar was sent home with the signup sheet. If you would like another copy of the calendar it is on the AW Becker intramurals website at https://eloughlin.edublogs.org/intramural-schedule/ The PE website also provides the ability to download the calendar into your computer or mobile device.

If you would like to receive text mesremind101sage updates please sign up for our remind101 class.  This is how we will be communicating any changes or cancellations to the Intramural schedule.

In the gym:

For the past few weeks we have been working on striking and volleying in the gym.

For students in grades K & 1 we have been working on striking balloons and beach balls with our hands.  It is important that students try to keep their bodies under the ball and bend their arms, knees, and ankles in preparation for the volley.  Don’t forget to follow through!

Students in 2nd and 3rd grade have added a paddle to their striking!  In 2nd grade they are working on a self volley against the wall and in 3rd grade they are working on volleying a ball between 2 people. When striking with a paddle student should try to:

  • Draw the paddle back in preparation for striking
  • step on opposite foot as contact is made
  • Swing racket or paddle low to high (making a U shape)
  • Twist their trunk as they swing
  • Follow through for completion of the striking action

Students in grades 4 and 5 have been working on hockey stick handling.  We have covered how to advance the puck/ball up the field using the stick, passing, and we are beginning to work on the strategy of a “Give and Go.”

Stay Active this Winter

It is very important that children remain active through the winter months, but cold temperatures, limited daylight, and snow can all be barriers to getting children moving. Fight the winter chill by participating in a swim or ski program. Both swimming and downhill skiing are lifelong sports. While you can learn at any age, kids have the advantage of being flexible, nimble and relatively fearless. Most ski schools will teach children as young as age 3.  With good instruction, many kids can ski independently on a beginner slope in just a few days.  At RCS swim lessons start at age 4 for swimming and 5 for diving.

AQUATICS CENTER INFORMATION

The American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim program at RCS Aquatics Center begins Saturday  November 14th.  It is a 5 week session that cost $40 for district residents and &$45 for non-residents.  The times are as follows:

  • Preschool  3:15-3:45pm
  • Level 1 4:00 – 4:40
  • Level 2&3 4:45-5:25
  • Level 4, 5,&6 5:30-6:10

Continuing Education is also offering a 5 week Diving Clinic with Coach Josh Wolin.  This is open for students ages 5& up.  The clinic begins Sunday November 8th. Times are by age:

  • Ages 5-10 3:00-3:45
  • Ages 11 & up 4:00-4:45

The cost of this clinic is $50 for district Residents and $60 for non-residents

For more information contact the continuing education office at 756-5200 ext. 2534 or by email phommel@rcscsd.org

Tumbling, Apple Run, Jump Rope for Heart, and Intramurals Update

Physical Education Class:

Students in This month in Physical Education class students will be doing the tumbling unit.  Students will learn the fundamentals of jumping and landing, balancing, rolling, hanging and climbing, and vaulting.  Students in grades 3-5 will expand on these concepts by sequencing them together and performing sequences with a partner or small group.

Apple Run

October may be the best time of year to get out for some physical activity.  The sun is warm, the air is cool, and the colors outside are beautiful.  This Thursday October 15th AW Becker Elementary School will be running its 7th annual Natalie Krause Apple Run to celebrate our healthy bodies and the wonderful fall weather we’ve been having.

Jump Rope for Heart

The Natalie Krause Apple Run is also our Jump Rope for Heart kick-off.  Students in grades 2-5 are encouraged to set up on-line donation pages to raise money for the American Heart Association.  Last year we had 43 students raise a total of $2,464.62.  JT Lyle was our school’s top fundraiser collecting $565 for the Jump Rope for Heart event.  Please go to www.heart.org/jump and look up our school to start collecting money.  Students in 1st grade and Kindergarten can participate in Jump Rope for Heart by donating to our AWB Donation Page.

Jump Rope For Heart Summary

Great job raising $4,000 for

Jump Rope for Heart

AW Becker!!!!!

Please make sure that you write a thank you card or e-mail to the people that have donated to your Jump Rope for Heart page.  It is important to say thank you.  Thank you shows our appreciation and conveys our gratitude. But more than that, it is a sign of respect to the person who has helped you (or given you something). It is an indication you do not take them for granted, and an acknowledgement that they matter.

The money that we raised provided things such as:

  • Educational materials that teach people how to personally reduce their risk of heart diseases and stroke
  • The message of healthy nutrition to elementary school students through lesson plans and activity guides
  • One hospital to teach its patients, caregivers, and health professionals about the risks of stroke – the nation’s No. 4 killer

I am so excited and proud of our students to have done such a great job.  We surpassed both of our goals for this year.  We had 58 students raise $4,100.  That is $1,000 and 18 participant more than our original goals.

I would like to thank the parents that helped their children raise the money for this great cause.  Even though the Jump Rope for Heart Unit is over we will continue to learn how to keep our heart healthy and how to take care of our bodies.

Have a wonderful weekend!

-Ms. L

It’s Finally Here!! The Jump Rope Unit!

So why do we jump rope?

Well here is a list:

  • Improved cardio vascular fitness
  • Increased muscular strength
  • Better endurance
  • Excellent body conditioning
  • Greater flexibility
  • Improved coordination
  • Stronger bones
  • Better timing and rhythm
  • Improved balance
  • Increased agility
  • Increase in social skills
  • Increase in self esteem
  • Fun and educational
  • Opportunities to be creative

In our physical education classes at AWB we will be learning different individual and partner jump roping skills.  In the older grades students will use the skills they learned to make a creative routine with their classmates.  The younger students will work on rope twirling skills, individual jump rope, and long jump rope skills.

Some of the most beneficial lifelong learning comes from learning through problem solving.  Students are taught independence, how to think out of the box, the importance of flexibility, how to communicate with others, and to be creative. The American Heart Association’s Jump Rope for Heart program can help students achieve many of the academic standards by encouraging them to engage in experiential learning strategies.  While participating in the program students also learn about action they can take to keep their own hearts healthy by living a physically active lifestyle.

If you want to see more information about the benefits of jumping rope with Jump Rope For Heart check out this article put out by AAHPERD.

As of today we have raised $1,740 for Jump Rope for Heart.  That is over half way to our goal!  Great work AWB!  Don’t forget to be ready to jump rope on December 6th.

-Ms. Loughlin

Last Week of Tumbling

As the tumbling unit comes to a close let’s review some of the material we covered:

Week 1

  • Jumps
  • Balances
  • Body Positions

Can you name three jumps we learned in PE?  Can you show a grown up?

Can you sequence a jump and a balance together?

What body position is used for  a “Toe Toucher?”

Week 2

  • Rolls

Rolls take a lot of practice to do well.  This year the entire school was very successful in learning the forward roll.  Can you name 3 more rolls we learned?

Week 3

  • Animal Walks
  • Vaulting
  • Wheeling
  • Sequencing and Creative performances

What was your favorite animal walk?  What body part do you put weight on for a vault?

The students in grades 4 and 5 worked cooperatively to create orginal perfomances for their assessment next week.  Students will be evaluated on how well they worked together, how many skills were included in the performance, how well the performance was done, and how well each skill was performed.

The tumbling unit is always a school favorite.  Our next unit will be jump rope.  Get ready to work for the jump rope champion!

-Ms. Loughlin
