Here's to a lifetime of healthy and active living!

2016-2017 Wrap Up

Each year in September, AW Becker lines up on the front lawn for the Natalie Krause Apple Run.  We celebrate our healthy bodies, the New York autumn weather (with a crisp apple donated by the AWB PTA), and our beloved teaching assistant Natalie Krause.

This year AW Becker raised nearly $2,000 while participating in Jump Rope for Heart.  .  We celebrated the money we raised with our Jump Rope for Heart event in school on December 5th, 2017.  Each student in grades 2-5 came to the gym to jump rope together.  Since 2011 AW Becker has raised over $15,000 for the American Heart Association

In December we change the gym into a Winter Wonderland.  Students travel through the snowman slalom, over the Ice Mountain, through the bear cave, then they skate into the Evergreen Forest, they put on their non-stick suits to jump through the Lollipop Forest, and finally jump down the chimney to Selkirk, NY.

February we fight cabin fever with dance. This year PE teamed up with Library in a Google Classroom for a service learning project.  The 5th graders researched dance, imagination/creativity, and children’s dance videos in library.  Then they applied what they learned to create a dance video in PE.  Take a look at them here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL61wTZg6MA9_9RlzZgL-V0M7_msL6l1-u

March the 4th and 5th graders were able to get out on the snow with some snowshoes.  Students experienced another way we can get out and play even in the colder weather.

April brought us our gymnastics unit.  Students practiced climbing, hanging, flipping, and vaulting throughout the month.  In the end we turned the gym into our Super Hero Obstacle Course.

In May we recognized the leaders in our 5th grade at the Sandra G. Morely Leadership Awards. This award is given for outstanding leadership and excellence in Physical Education.  The Physical Education staff felt that Tyler Carrk, Alivia Ortiz, Kylee Fennell, Sienna Rinella, Madison Wiley, Jack McFerran, Jack Reif, Jillian Hallisey, Jacob Alaimo, Jason Stevens Jr., Nashea Haynie, Nina Kozlowski, Edward Reville, Emerson Knapp IV, and Sydney Campbell have performed well in the areas of fitness, citizenship, and leadership.  All of these students were invited to an award ceremony at Hudson Valley Community College.  You can check out a video summary of the event here.
